Have you ever wondered...“What is God calling me to do?” or “What is my purpose?” If you’ve thought this, you’re not alone. Many of us struggle with these questions, regardless of whether we’re just starting our faith journey, stepping into a new season, or simply looking to feel more fulfilled.
The good news is that God does have a unique calling for every believer, and thankfully, His Word is filled with promises and guidance to help us discover it and help us be confident in His purpose for our lives.
God has designed us with intentionality. Our lives carry meaning far beyond what we can see in the moment. No one else can fulfill our unique purpose.
The Bible lets us know that God didn’t create anyone by accident. Psalm 139 lets us know that God formed us in our mother’s womb — carefully, wonderfully, and purposefully. We’re all a one-of-a-kind creation. We have unique gifts, talents, passions, and life experiences that God wants to use to make a difference. We might find our purpose develops in a quiet, behind-the-scenes way or bold, visible ways. Our life story is designed to bring glory to God and to reflect His love to those around us. Our existence is part of a bigger plan.
Here are some scriptures to help you remember that you are part of God’s plan:
Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Ephesians 2:10 (NIV)
"For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."
Psalm 139:14 (NIV)
"I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well."
We might feel a calling towards a specific career or maybe we desire to obtain a specific life achievement, but our purpose should be more about our daily obedience to God, serving others, growing in faith, and using our gifts in the unique ways God intended.
You might be thinking, “Okay, I believe God has a plan for me… but how do I actually figure out what it is?”
That’s a very relatable question — and you’re not alone in asking it. Discovering our God-given calling sometimes feels like a journey when we’re really looking for that one-time “aha” moment. Sometimes we expect God to just give us the entire blueprint for our life all at once, but most of the time, He asks us to walk with Him step by step and trust Him along the way.
But the good thing is, God doesn’t leave us guessing. He provides directions, confirmation, and gives us peace about our calling. We’re able to find this through His Word, His Spirit, and even our daily experiences, so even if you’re feeling unsure about your purpose, the good thing is, you’re already on the right track by seeking Him.
Here are some simple, faith steps to help us all lean into our unique calling and uncover how God wants to use us:
1. Start with Prayer
It may sound simple, but it’s intentional; our honest prayer is powerful. We can ask God to reveal areas where He wants to use us. Pray for clarity, patience, and an open heart.
2. Study the Word
God speaks through His Word, and many times, understanding your purpose starts with understanding His promises. When we read the Bible, we should pay attention to verses about serving, using our gifts, and walking in faith.
3. Reflect on Your Gifts & Passions
God has wired us with specific strengths and passions for a reason. We should think about things we’re naturally drawn to, like encouraging others, teaching, creating, organizing, or helping behind the scenes. These are clues that often point toward how God can use us.
Romans 12:6 reminds us: "We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us..."
4. Seek Wise Counsel
Talking to friends, mentors, or spiritual leaders can be helpful. Many times, others can see gifts and potential in us that we might overlook.
5. Take Action, Even in Small Ways
Sometimes, clarity will come as we simply move. We can volunteer, serve at church, or join a small group. We can say “yes” to an opportunity that feels aligned with our gifts. We don’t need the whole picture to take the next step.
Discovering our calling isn’t always as clear-cut as we’d like it to be. It can feel overwhelming, confusing, or it may even be discouraging at times. We may battle some of the same struggles other believers face along the way:
Comparing Ourselves to Others
We may view others serving boldly, and we start to feel like our gifts don’t measure up.
But the truth is, God didn’t design us to be a copy of someone else. Our calling isn’t supposed to look like anyone else's because our life, our story, and our influence are uniquely ours.
"Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else." Galatians 6:4
We have to stay in our own lane and trust that what God has placed inside of us is valuable and needed.
Feeling Unqualified
Imposter syndrome is real, especially in the faith journey. Sometimes we feel unworthy, inexperienced, or like our past disqualifies us. But throughout the Bible, God has used ordinary, flawed people to fulfill extraordinary purposes.
2 Corinthians 12:9 says, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."
We don’t have to have it all together; we just need to be willing.
Wondering If You Missed Your Chance
You may be thinking, “It’s too late for me,” or “I should’ve stepped into this years ago.” But remember, God’s timing is perfect.
Whether we’re 18 or 80, God can still use us. His plans for our life are never wasted, delayed beyond repair, or dependent on our perfect performance.
Even if doubts creep in, we can anchor ourselves in the promise of Philippians 1:6: "Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."
Our calling and the work God has started in our lives is unfolding, step by step. Remember that no struggle, fear, or misstep can stop His plans for us. Our unique calling will unfold in His perfect timing.
