About Bishop Robert Stallings, Sr.
Our Former Leader
Bishop Robert H. Stallings, Sr. served as Pastor of the Church of God and Saints of Christ, located at 109 Beers Street in New Haven CT for 39 years (1975-2014). He was the Chief Executive Officer and Presiding Bishop of the Church of God and Saints of Christ.
Bishop Stallings was ordained for greatness in the Church and rose through the ranks of the choir to become the Minister of Music, General Chorister, composing and rearranging songs and melodies that we continue to sing today. He was a Seminary school graduate and a recipient of numerous honors and awards. He also served as President of the New Haven Clergy Association.
His love of music established him as an accomplished singer, composer, and arranger. Bishop Stallings performed with many world-renowned musicians including the Dixie Hummingbirds, Mahalia Jackson, and Sam Cooke. He composed countless melodies.
Some of his well known compositions are “I’m Sold on Him”, “Standing on the Banks of the Jordan”, “They’ll Be Coming”, “We’ve Got a Rough Road Ahead”, “Disciples I Want You to Remember”, and “Oh, South Africa”, to name a few.
As a gifted orator and preacher, Bishop Stallings is known for his many soul stirring sermons. He travelled the world and preached in Israel, England, Japan, South Korea, Jamaica, Canada, Bermuda, and South Africa. He was a highly requested preacher and lecturer and served as advisor/mentor to pastors and churches across the world.
In August of 2018, Bishop Stallings addressed the church, stating that the Lord had given him the name of who would carry on the work of the church. Using the example of Moses and Joshua, Bishop Stallings named his successor in the person of Bishop C.L. Hendricks to lead the “Joshua Generation.” Joshua 1:9, “Have I not commanded thee? Be strong and of good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee withersoever thou goest.”
